Chowpaty Beach

Chowpaty Beach is the heart of Porbandar’s public life — a 3-kilometre arc of sand along the Arabian Sea where the entire city seems to gather in the evenings. Unlike the commercialised beaches of larger cities, Chowpaty retains a genuinely local character: fishermen’s boats at one end, families at the other, and the ancient Sarthaneshwar Mahadev temple framing the scene at dusk.

The sunsets here are extraordinary. Porbandar sits on the western tip of the Saurashtra peninsula, meaning the sun sets directly over the Arabian Sea — an unobstructed horizon of gold and crimson. The evening hours from 6 PM onwards are when the beach truly comes alive, with bhajia stalls, sev khamani vendors, chaat carts and local snacks lining the promenade.

Beyond the evening scene, Chowpaty Beach is the starting point for exploring Porbandar’s coastal identity. The fishing harbour is a short walk south. The Marine National Park, protecting coral reefs and marine biodiversity of the Gulf of Kutch, begins nearby. Early morning walks along the beach, before the crowds, are peaceful and atmospheric.

Madhavpur Beach is Gujarat’s finest unspoiled coastal destination — a 5-kilometre arc of clean, calm sand on the Arabian Sea, 45km south of Porbandar on the Saurashtra coast. Unlike Porbandar’s Chowpaty, Madhavpur sees relatively few visitors and has no commercial clutter — the beach, the sea, the sky and the silence are the entire experience.

The site carries profound mythological significance. According to Hindu scripture, it was here on this beach that Lord Krishna brought Rukmini (his future wife) by chariot after their dramatic elopement from Vidarbha. The Madhavrai Temple on the beach — dedicated to this event — is an important pilgrimage site, and the annual Madhavpur Mela (March/April, around Holi) celebrates this divine union with a large festival, cultural performances and a massive fair that draws pilgrims from across India.

Between October and March, Madhavpur Beach is a nesting site for Olive Ridley sea turtles — one of the most important marine turtle nesting grounds on Gujarat’s coast. Conservation volunteers monitor the beach and occasionally guided night watches are available for responsible tourism.
