Chowpaty Beach is the heart of Porbandar’s public life — a 3-kilometre arc of sand along the Arabian Sea where the entire city seems to gather in the evenings. Unlike the commercialised beaches of larger cities, Chowpaty retains a genuinely local character: fishermen’s boats at one end, families at the other, and the ancient Sarthaneshwar Mahadev temple framing the scene at dusk.
The sunsets here are extraordinary. Porbandar sits on the western tip of the Saurashtra peninsula, meaning the sun sets directly over the Arabian Sea — an unobstructed horizon of gold and crimson. The evening hours from 6 PM onwards are when the beach truly comes alive, with bhajia stalls, sev khamani vendors, chaat carts and local snacks lining the promenade.
Beyond the evening scene, Chowpaty Beach is the starting point for exploring Porbandar’s coastal identity. The fishing harbour is a short walk south. The Marine National Park, protecting coral reefs and marine biodiversity of the Gulf of Kutch, begins nearby. Early morning walks along the beach, before the crowds, are peaceful and atmospheric.
